DON GASPAR DE PORTOLA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Home
Library

Don Gaspar de Portola Elementary School has a modern, up-to-date Library Media Center, which was built four years ago.

Our library is open 5 days a week to enable our students to choose reading materials, get help with research projects and strengthen their academic skills on their way to becoming life long learners.

The library program consists of weekly class visits, hands on instruction in using the library resources; such as electronic card catalog, reference materials, locating books, and sifting through Internet information.

Portola School uses an electronic reading program, “The Accelerated Reader” in our library. This program encourages our students to read and helps them develop solid comprehension skills. Each time the student reads a book they take a computerized test and are awarded points depending on the difficulty of the book. These points are then redeemed for prizes.  There is a list of these AR books linked to our school web page.

Our library also offers a Book Club, open to all 4th and 5th grade students, in which selections are read and discussed in depth.

Don Gaspar de Portola Library houses a solid collection of reading and reference materials at all levels so that our students, from the reading whizzes to the reluctant readers, can develop their skills and feel they are successful. Parents of our students are also welcome to check out books from our library to encourage their children to become life-long readers.
